Is free shipping worth it?
Free shipping is worth it only when the useful value you add is greater than the extra amount you spend. The final checkout total—not the shipping label—tells you which choice is cheaper.

Compare the shipping fee with the amount you must add. If shipping is $8 and you would need to add a $12 item, paying shipping leaves $4 more in your wallet. If the added item costs $6, adding it produces a checkout total that is $2 lower—and you receive the item.
Example: pay $7 shipping or spend $10 more
Paying shipping is $3 cheaper. The added item may still be worthwhile if you genuinely need it, but it does not save money.
When adding an item makes sense
- The item costs less than the shipping fee you avoid.
- A spend-threshold discount makes the new final total lower.
- You already planned to buy the item soon and its price is reasonable.
When to pay shipping
Pay shipping when the cheapest useful item costs more than the fee, or when you are adding something only to make the shipping line disappear. Treat unwanted merchandise as a cost, even if delivery becomes “free.”
