Coupon or Free Shipping: Which Discount Saves More?
The better badge is not always the better deal. Convert both offers into dollars, then check whether the store lets either discount affect the shipping charge.
Calculate both savings in dollars
For a percentage coupon, multiply the eligible merchandise total by the discount rate. Free shipping is worth the delivery charge that disappears. The larger valid saving normally wins.
- 15% of an $80 eligible cart = $12
- Free shipping that removes an $8 fee = $8
- The coupon is worth $4 more in this example
Find the break-even cart value
Divide the shipping fee by the coupon rate written as a decimal. With $8 shipping and a 10% coupon, the break-even cart is $80. Below $80, free shipping saves more; above $80, the coupon saves more.
Coupon and shipping break-even examples
Each row compares the dollar value of the two offers before tax.
| Scenario | Coupon value | Shipping value | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10% on $50; $8 shipping | $5.00 | $8.00 | Free shipping wins by $3 |
| 15% on $80; $8 shipping | $12.00 | $8.00 | Coupon wins by $4 |
| 20% on $40; $8 shipping | $8.00 | $8.00 | Offers tie |
Build the comparison from eligible amounts
Suppose a $100 cart contains $30 of excluded merchandise. A 20% code may save only $14 because it applies to the remaining $70, while a $12 delivery waiver is still worth $12. Calculating from the full cart would incorrectly report a $20 coupon saving and exaggerate its lead.
Percentage caps matter in the same way. A 25% coupon capped at $20 reaches its maximum on an $80 eligible subtotal. Beyond that point, a larger cart does not make the coupon stronger.
When the lower discount can produce the lower checkout
Offer value alone can mislead when one choice changes another charge. A coupon worth $10 may push the discounted merchandise below a free-shipping minimum and restore a $9 delivery fee. A free-shipping offer worth $8 may then produce the lower total.
- Compare final checkout totals after entering each code separately.
- Check whether discounts apply before or after tax.
- Record any handling fee that remains with free shipping.
- If stacking is allowed, test the combined option as a third checkout.
Check the fine print
Calculate from the eligible subtotal, not automatically from the headline cart value. Brand exclusions, maximum coupon savings, minimum spends, taxes, and stacking rules can change the answer.
